ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONS. Among the many crafts of the Goryeo Dynasty, which was the heyday of culture and art, najeon is one of the most important techniques. Goryeo’s original development of the najeon method was unparalleled in artistry and technology, and the brilliant color of the mother-of-pearl is said to be the best of the crafts. In addition, the number of inlaid pieces is rare, with only about 20 pieces, making them even more precious.

This piece is believed to have been made in the late Goryeo Dynasty, and is remarkable for its sophistication and the ethereal color of its lid. It was probably used to store sutras, and the lid has a curved surface that rises slightly upward. The base was painted and then filled with chrysanthemum carvings on all sides except the bottom. It takes a very sophisticated technique to decorate the base so densely that the paint is invisible, which is a testament to Goryeo’s skill at the time. The stems are made of twisted metal wires, and the leaves are curved in a C-shape, which is characteristic of Goryeo najeon. However, the enlarged corolla, the double-flowered dots, and the lack of white space in the background are characteristic of the later Goryeo period, and the entry has a transitional aspect, continuing the tradition of the Goryeo period but also changing into something new.

Najeon lacquerware has endured a long period of time, so it is not uncommon for the najeon to be lost or in poor condition. This is especially true for those made during the Goryeo Dynasty, where it is not always easy to find the original pieces. Nevertheless, the exhibit is still intact, and although there are missing pieces here and there, it still has a noble and dignified appearance, showing off the brilliant color of mother-of-pearl. Recently, a similar Goryeo najeon was returned to Japan and made a lot of news, so we would like to introduce a work that fits the phrase “fine details are priceless” through this auction.
