This piece is a rectangular mother-of-pearl box decorated with a repeating pattern of blooming lotus flowers, buds, leaves, and scrolling vines. It consists of a base and a lid, with the designs on both sections carefully aligned in a continuous vertical composition.
Mother-of-pearl lacquerware is a decorative technique in which thin pieces of shell are inlaid into the surface of an object in various shapes and then coated with layers of lacquer. It is one of the representative art forms demonstrating the refined craftsmanship of the Joseon Dynasty.
This piece was decorated using the ta-chal method, in which mother-of-pearl is cut into motifs and textured by striking it with a hammer. Because the production of mother-of-pearl lacquerware required considerable time and highly skilled workmanship, such objects were primarily used by the royal family and the upper classes.
