ANTIQUE FURNITURE COLLECTIONS IN KOREA. GYEONGSANG PROVINCE.

The Gyeongsang Province in the south of the Korean peninsula was a particularly important center for the production of high-end furniture. Numerous museums attest to this through the quality of their collections. Notably, the Namgaram Museum which holds significant and unique pieces.

NAMGARAM MUSEUM. Jinju-si, Gyeongsangnam-do.

A varied and very interesting collection. High-quality furniture, with particular attention paid to a large number of boxes used by the nobility. Gyeongsang Do, in the south of the peninsula, was a particularly wealthy province and an important center of furniture production.

Morijang. This cabinet is made of zelkova tree, pear tree, and paulownia tree. 
The storage space consists of a double door and drawers. Beautifully patterned zelkova wood was used symmetrically in all parts, including the front door panel, frame, and drawers.

The top with a scroll-shaped top that is rolled up at both ends is called “Gyeongsang”, and the top with a straight top is called “Seoan”. “Ansangmun” is engraved on the panel of the two upper drawers, and “Yeouidomun” is engraved on the panel of the lower part. H. 37cm, W. 41cm, D. 34cm.

Palanquin called Sa-in-gyo in korean and refers to a palanquin carried by four people, two each at the front and back. It is mainly used for weddings, and the bride and groom sometimes ride horses, but most of them ride on palanquins. 
The bride’s palanquin was painted or decorated with tassels, decorated with white cloth, and a tiger skin was placed on the palanquin to ward off evil spirits. H. 126cm, W. 90cm, D. 111cm.

Haejuban: The top plate is rectangular and has a round corner shape. 
It has a gentle curved shape, the character ‘卍’ is engraved on both legs. Haejuban is from the Haeju region of Hwanghae Province.

The top plate is semicircular. This design was mainly produced in the Jeolla region.
Hojokban. The legs of the table were sleek and looked like the legs of a tiger. The entire surface was lacquered.

Mother-of-pearl lacquerware dressing box. This rectangular-shaped mirror is designed to be used by opening the lid and tilting the mirror up at an angle. The box is decorated with a hexagonal tortoiseshell pattern and has various shapes such as fish, peaches, bamboo, and cranes with broken and lined patterns.

Mirror box. 경대 A dressing box is a wooden piece of furniture that stores cosmetics, makeup tools, combs, and decorative items such as hairpins. It is also called Janggyeong (粧鏡) or Jangyeom (粧奩). H. 12,2cm, W. 15cm, D. 20,8cm.
Comb box. 빗접. Cranes and flower patterns were engraved around the character ‘壽’ at the top, and elements that appear in Jangsaengdo (pine wood, roe deer, phoenix, bamboo, etc.) patterns were engraved around it. It has a turtle-shaped lock.

Those boxes could be used to store hats or other small fabrics. It also served as a decoration when placed on top of large furniture.

Stationary box – 문갑. Mother-of-pearl patterns of flowers, butterflies, turtles, and birds were inlaid on the entire surface. Such boxes were generally placed in the space below the window and used to store important documents. Comb box – 빗접. The crane pattern was engraved around the character ‘壽’ in the upper part, and the elements that appear in Jangsaengdo (pine wood, roe deer, phoenix, bamboo, etc.) were engraved around it. It has a turtle-shaped lock.

Gimhae Bandaji. This is a Gyeongsang-do bandaji made in Gimhae area from zelkova wood . The front lock plate has a typical swallowtail design engraved with schematic forms such as a swastika or geometric patterns. The four ears of the door plate have flower-shaped ear decorations. The entire metalwork plates was engraved with a schematic swastika (卍) character and geometric patterns. H. 51cm, W. 90cm, D. 44cm.
Jinju Bandaji. From Jinju area in Gyeongsang do province, this chest is made of pine wood. The characteristic features of Bandaji from the Jinju area of are the cicada-shaped hinges and a button-shaped puller decoration on a diamond-shaped background. A chest of drawers designed for storing different medicines separately according to type. The front side consists of small drawers on the top and a multipurpose storage space on the bottom. There are a total of 81 drawers for storing medicine (9 rows by 9 columns). The ring attached in the middle of each drawer serves as a handle, and engraved to its left and right are characters indicating the medicine that belongs inside that drawer.

A chest with a half-opening front made of a thick panel of zelkova wood. Similar chests were mostly produced in and around the cities of Gaeseong and Pyeongyang. As with the construction of wardrobes, the front side is divided by rails and stiles, resulting in the main opening panel being shorter than the length of the chest and flanked by two panels, creating separate storage spaces inside.

A small chest designed to be placed near the headrest during sleep, for convenient storage and retrieval of valuables or everyday items. This particular headside chest is made of pine and pear wood and consists of three parts: the top board, the body, and the legs.

A low floor desk for reading or writing, which also served to mark the place in a room for the elderly or the host when greeting a guest. This piece of furniture originated from sutra reading desks used in Buddhist temples and came into use in private homes during the Joseon period. This item, from the 19th century, takes the form of a traditional sutra reading desk, with scroll-shaped side decorations on the edges of the top panel and is supported by tiger-paw-shaped legs.

A box made of unvarnished paulownia wood covered with shark skin, designed for storing seals. An internal support piece exists for the trapezoidal lid, and strips of metal are nailed to the outer edges to make the box sturdier.

A deep case connected to a shallow lid with hinges. On the opposite side of the hinges is an apparatus for padlocking, allowing the case to function as a safe for securing important documents, jewelry, money, and other valuables. The case is covered with shark skin, and a separate piece rising from the inner rim of the box supports the lid from inside.

Built from zelkova with burlwood panels, this piece is decorated with fine yellow brass fittings. The top three drawers feature bat-shaped hinges, while the opening section, which doesn’t extend all the way, is maintained by swallowtail hinges and a round lock plate. At the center bottom, a decorative plate is adorned with the “Manja” (Swastika) pattern.
